Next Up Philly Rapper
In a city that has brought the world the Fresh Prince, Beanie Siegel and State Property, and Meek Mill arrives a newcomer by the name of MIKEBROWN. Despite only having a few songs released to the public, one should appreciate the artistry and the artist in the making.
MIKEBROWN does not seem to be a fake it until you make it artist and from the few songs within his catalogue there seems to be no false claims and portrayal of being something that he is not just to fit in. Below is a brief interview to get know MIKEBROWN a little better.
Kulture Vulturez: What’s something that’s iconic or stands out about Philly hip hop to you?
MIKE BROWN: I think one of the most impressive things about Philly hip hop is that it transcends beyond just music. We have bragging rights to people like Will Smith, The Roots, Beanie Sigel, Freeway… the list goes on. And then when you look at Philly today, you have guys like Meek, Uzi and Lil Dicky who have completely shifted the culture and taken it to new heights.
Kulture Vulturez: How is Philly culture embedded in your music?
MIKE BROWN: You can find Philly in every song that I’ve done. I think more than anything else my flows are a direct reflection of the city – they are smooth and have character. I feel like when you are coming out of Philly it’s so important to tap into the energy and soul of the city. Philly has influenced so many artists all over the world and I’m no different.
Kulture Vulturez: How are you different from other artists?
MIKE BROWN: I have a unique story. I’m a mixed kid that grew up in the suburbs but spent a lot of time in Olney because of my dad’s businesses. I played college basketball and spent some time in the Navy. I have a sound that caters to a lot of different people and I think that’s what this is all about – bringing people together through music.
Kulture Vulturez: When and what made you want to start rapping?
MIKE BROWN: I feel like I’ve been rapping my whole life. I started recording songs in 2017 but I was only sending them to my close friends. It wasn’t until this past year when I decided I had something special to share with the world, and I haven’t looked back since. It’s always been my dream to be an artist. I grew up a huge fan of guys like Drake, Lil’ Wayne and Jay-Z so when I saw how those guys were doing things that seemed larger than life I knew that’s exactly what I wanted to do.
Kulture Vulturez: What are your favorite songs that you released and why?
MIKE BROWN: “And You’re?” is my favorite song that I’ve released so far. It’s one of my favorite beats and I think when you pair it with the music video we did you really get an appreciation for how beautiful Philly is. With that being said, I’m excited about the songs I am dropping next. They are special and showcase my versatility as an artist and I think people will really enjoy them.
Kulture Vulturez: What future plans do you have?
MIKE BROWN: I plan on continuing to put out good music. That’s at the forefront of everything for me. As we continue to get back to normal life, I’m looking forward to doing shows around the city and connecting with other Philly artists. I also hope to collaborate with some of my favorite rappers in the game and play my part in pushing the culture forward.
