List of the Top Congolese Artists

In the heart of Central Africa lies the birthplace of gifted Congolese artists, artists that include international stars like GIMS, Fally Ipupa, Koffi Olomide, and many more.   The Congo has already produced and created great Congolese artists that once consisted of Wenge Musica, Madilu System, Mbilia Bel, Papa Wemba, Simaro, Tshala Muana, Abeti Masikini, M’Pongo Love, Pépé Kallé, Franco Luambo and numerous others from the 1960s and 1970s to the 2000s.

When searching for top Congolese artists, an outsider would assume the top musicians consists of Congolese Afrobeat artists, but there are more popular genres of music within the Congo. With a comparison to Afrobeat, the global sensation genre of music is more like Congo’s Soukous and Rumba music, two styles of dance music that date back to the 1960s.

While there are two Congo’s, Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasa, which was formerly known as Zaire, the majority of the artists originally come from the larger Congo-Kinshasa, but there are still artists that represent Congo-Brazzaville. With ties to the country of France and with both Congo’s vastly speaking French as one of their primarily languages many artists are located in France. Whatever may the reason be, the country of France provides a much larger market for Congolese artists to truly have a much more prosperous career in music, meaning most artists are more considered as French artists than Congolese artists.

To be clear, the list below of top Congolese artists only highlights the world’s best artists of Congolese descent, whether they are located in central Africa or located in western Europe or whether they consider themselves as actual Congolese musicians or as French singers and performers.
