Red Light Districts
Map and Tour of Red Light Districts Across The World
Red light districts have been around for centuries, often forming in major cities where demand for the world’s oldest profession and adult entertainment services are high. They got their name from the red lights that hung outside brothels and other establishments, signaling where these businesses were located. Famous districts like Amsterdam’s De Wallen, Hamburg’s Reeperbahn, and Bangkok’s Patpong have become well known.
Over time, they have transformed. In the past, they were often off the radar and hidden from the public view. But many cities have worked to clean them up, making them more presentable. However, they still come with a lot of problems. Issues like the exploitation and forcing people, even underage individuals, against their will. But this mostly occurs in unsanctioned and unofficial districts and regions.
Issues like these have led to ongoing debates about the best ways to handle red light districts. Some people argue that decriminalizing the profession and providing more social services would help address these problems. Others think that stricter laws and enforcement are the answer. Regardless of the approach, it’s clear that the profession is not going anywhere.
From the street walkers on the back streets of the United States to the establishments of Europe and Asia, workers have had a place to perform services since the biblical days. As times evolve, apps and online websites have provided a better way than walking “The Track” as a street walker or posting outside.
