Tallahassee Hoods

North Florida’s own, the capital city of the state, over 200,000 residents, home to Tallahassee hoods on the North Side and South Sides of town, home to T-Pain and rapper Real Boston Richey, and nicknamed Tally for short, view the small streets of Tallahassee.

Tallahassee is one of Florida’s oldest city, with the first hood, or Black community, in the city being Frenchtown located off of Old Bainbridge Road. Outside of 1010 Basin (Griffin Heights) and the Joe Louis Street apartments, Frenchtown is the only place located on the North Side.

The neighborhood was originally home and built for French immigrants, which gave the community its name. By the late 1800s numerous of Black families moved and made themselves a home in the area.

The southern half of Tallahassee, which houses the legendary HBCU of Florida A&M, holds a large portion of the city. The original Black community was a section called Smokey Hollow, but it was later destroyed by the building of Highway 20. Now this side of town includes South City, 4 Point, Holton Street, Roberts Ave., and a few others.
