New Haven Hoods Breakdown
The hoods of New Haven have developed their own reputations throughout Connecticut and New England. Areas like Fair Haven, home to a large Latino community, but also home to the once rivals of Quinnipiac Terrace (The Island) and Franam Courts (The G). Similar, beefs have existed between neighboring hoods like the Ville (Newhallville) and the Tre, near Goffe Street.
The West Rock area, an isolated reputable area of multiple housing projects built along Winton Road, has often been viewed one of the city’s most active. Other New Haven neighborhoods, such as the Hill (predominantly Hispanic), the Jungle (CSS), the 8, and several others all have their own story, from street activity to producing a resilient group of people.
From the 1950s to the 1970s, New Haven went through the process of slum clearance and urban renewal, which saw the construction of public housing complexes and the removal of entire neighborhoods, especially near downtown.
Prior, the city’s neighborhoods were largely home to White and European families, but the arrival of southern African Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Latinos in the 1950s and 60s began a change, especially with the new developments of Farnam Courts, Quinnipiac Terrace, and Elm Haven.
Initially, Irish and German immigrants received employment and housing, but after World War II opportunities for Blacks, followed by Puerto Ricans, opened up. Around this time, many from the city’s White community began to move and relocate out of the city of New Haven and into the surrounding of suburbs of Connecticut. This would create the number of hoods in the city.
