Chattanooga Gangs

Map of Chattanooga Hoods

Overlooked due to fellow Tennessean cities of Nashville and Memphis, but there is not much of a difference other than the size, especially with Chattanooga gangs.  There is black side of town, or a hood or whatever terminology you would like to use, and there is a downtown, suburbs, and everything else that makes a city.

With the city’s size, there are only a Chattanooga hoods throughout the city, like the South Side’s Alton Park, East Chatt’s Avondale, the West Side, Highland Park, East Lake, and a few more. Below highlights some of the gangs and most of the city’s hood, but still a working progress.

History of Chattanooga Hoods

While the 1940s and 1950s was thriving with job opportunities, the city has long change since, the old black business district of 9th Street.  Chattanooga has always had a number of black neighborhoods, especially on the South and East Sides, with the West Side originally being a diverse area before becoming one of the roughest in the city.

As the factories closed and jobs became limited the new era of the Chattanooga communities began in the 70s. A city that once had White and Black gangs, the former not just being the KKK who terrorized the Black community for the majority of the 1900s, remains active today with Gangster Disciples, Rollin 40 Crips, Grape Street Crips, various Bloods, and others.

As of 2025, what can be seen in parts of the city is gentrification and major changes in the neighborhoods. The old Boone Heights and Poss Homes projects being closed or demolished, the rebuilding of Alton Park, heavy gentrification of Highland Park and communities near downtown, as many residents whose families originally left the city are gradually moving back.
