Alabama’s second largest city and the state’s capital, Montgomery, also called the “Gump” for short, has a long history, from Black culture in America to Montgomery Alabama gangs and hoods within the city.

One of the leading cities in then Civil Rights movement, but this movement eventually led to a change in the city. Before the 1970s, White families lived in many of the communities throughout Montgomery, while Blacks were limited to living in only a few areas, Centennial Hill.

After integration and desegregating the city’s school district and other public places, many had issues with the two groups having interaction with one another. This would later lead to many White families to leave a number of neighborhoods and move further east, allowing black families to eventually live in the majority of Montgomery communities in the inner city..

The heart of the Montgomery hoods reside on the West Side, South Side, and the few sections of the North Side. While gentrification has affected some neighborhoods, like the former projects of Cedar Park, Trenholm Court, TLC (Tulane Court), Smiley Court, and Riverside Heights, but many still around.

With most of projects removed, there remains hoods like Woodley Park and Spring Valley around Woodley Road, Southlawn, Twin Gates and Woodcrest, all along the Selma Highway, Ridgecrest, Normandale, Washington Park, and Newtown. Not to leave out more suburban and middle class areas, even though not “‘hoods,” going down Vaughn Road or Wares Ferry Road.
